Sarah Palin was billed to speak as the biggest attraction after Beck, though in truth she came and left early without leaving much of a mark. The proceedings were Beck’s to ringmaster, and consciously modeled on a mega-church ceremony: long, with an endless closing sermon, gospel interruptions, would-be-flashy videos and lots of Jesus. If an observer with no knowledge of the Tea Party or any of the speakers were dropped in, he wouldn’t see anything that alarming: the ceremony was — with a few notable exceptions — apolitical and sappily religious, the kind of thing that should cause no one alarm. But context is everything, of course, and the racial dialogue (among other things) playing out onstage was more than perverse enough to compel attention.

Have you noticed the brightly colored bell peppers in the market lately? They're glorious. Here's a quick and easy recipe for Italian peperonata, or fried peppers, with onions, fresh plum tomatoes, garlic, and basil. This is one of those "I almost ate the whole batch" dishes, only reluctantly shared with my parents who agreed they were terrific. Peperonata recipes come in many versions; some get cooked a good long time, some get cooked with potatoes, or without tomatoes. This dish is certainly open-for-improvisation. Rather than cooking the peppers until they were stew-like, we opted for a light sauté so there is still some crunch in the vegetables. A perfect side dish for chicken or fish, great on bread, and great on its own too.

Only 19, Stevens, who'd worked with Annette Funicello on The Mickey Mouse Club, was making the transition from child to adult actor, and under the tutelage of Cohen, he grew up fast in a world of guns, gambling, strippers and celebrities. Though the story is the familiar "innocent lured to the dark side by money, glamour and charisma" arc, Stevens and Lockwood's narrative chugs along after a slow start thanks to some snappy patter ("I was producing enough testosterone to make a major deposit in the Federal Sperm Bank") and the lure of the Hollywood mob-Ricky Nelson, Dean Martin and, of course, Frank Sinatra have cameos.

For years, the league has cultivated a system of superstar inertia, providing players every possible incentive to stay put. A player who re-signs with his team is eligible for longer contracts and bigger raises, amounting to as much as $30 million over a six-year deal. With few exceptions, it has been wildly effective.

Until this summer, no superstar in his prime had changed teams via free agency since 2000, when Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady joined the Orlando Magic. No player of James’s stature had done so since 1996, when Shaquille O’Neal left Orlando for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Otherwise, the system worked, keeping Tim Duncan in San Antonio, Reggie Miller in Indiana, Chris Webber in Sacramento and John Stockton and Karl Malone in Utah throughout their primes. In fact, it has worked so well that some agents regard superstar free agency as a virtual myth.

The Marlins, meanwhile, said they had to pay off a hunk of the franchise's debt so they could make sure they qualified for the loan that will fund their portion of their new ballpark. And without that ballpark, they were doomed.

I’ve made this many times using raw almonds and peanuts, but if you want to experiment with other nuts, I’d be interested in hearing how they turn out. I think round nuts work best so the sugar can tumble around and coat them, rather than get stuck in any pecan-like nooks and crannies.

Watched “Triumph & Tragedy: The 1994 Montreal Expos”. Since a) I am the world’s most pathetic Expos fan and nostalgist b) I’m friendly with one of the executive producers and c) actually had a couple of very short talking head clips in the show, figured I should do a brief writeup. Having just finished watching the special, I’m feeling anger and regret (not at the show, but at what happened to the Expos), so this might be brief.

They’re re-airing the show this Friday, August 20 at 4 pm. It’s worth checking out, whether or not you’re an Expos fan. All kinds of interesting stuff about the challenge of running a small-market franchise, how to build a great team, fans’ perspective, etc. DVR it.

A quick additional note before diving in: I tell old Expos stories all the time, and long-time JK.com readers will have heard a few of these stories already. Consider me a senile old man, and please accept my apologies in advance.

It was early February, and the shopkeeper wanted the Tiempos pronto. Neither he nor Lin, the factory manager, were authorized to make Nikes. They would have no blueprints or instructions to follow. But Lin didn’t mind. He was used to working from scratch. A week later, Lin, who asked that I only use his first name, received a pair of authentic Tiempos, took them apart, studied their stitching and molding, drew up his own design and oversaw the production of 3,000 Nike clones. A month later, he shipped the shoes to Italy. “He’ll order more when there’s none left,” Lin told me recently, with confidence.

I love these peanuts! Not only are they absolutely scrumptious and the easiest candy you can make, but if you keep a sack of raw almonds or peanuts on hand, you can make them in about 10 minutes. Tied into a little sack, they're a great hostess gift in lieu of a bottle of wine (and cheaper!), and I serve them often as a cocktail snack, or after dinner, in a bowl for everyone to dig into.

It is not a coincidence that Carlos Boozer's salary takes a significant upstroke only after that of Luol Deng has expired; similarly, it is not a coincidence that these three unguaranteed contracts all come in the summer that Derrick Rose will need paying. It is not a coincidence that Brewer and Watson's contracts goes down over their lifespan, nor that J.J. Redick's would have done, nor that Korver's flatlines, nor that Boozer's hits its lowest point at the time Joakim Noah will need a new contract. Once the max-slot guys all agreed to sign with Miami, Chicago's priority became obtaining good quality role players at competitive prices while maintaining roster flexibility. They have done it well, even if they still need another shooter.)

Shandling is striving to exist—and thus to be funny—completely in the moment. "The direction I'm going in is eventually you won't know if it's a joke or not," he explains, describing his new act, which he has been quietly testing in clubs where his name never appears on the marquee. "What I want to happen is that I talk for an hour and the audience doesn't realize it is funny until they're driving home."

BLIND – VIDEO DAYS (1991)

classic skate film now on DVD re-issue.
starring
Mark Gonzales, Jason Lee, Guy Mariano, Rudy Johnson and Jordan Richter.

if you skate, then it's mandatory to watch this video.
this a great video from the street skating revolution happening just after
the death of 80's vert skating.
alot of people think it started with 1989's H-Street – Hokus Pokus;
well maybe it might have, but this video seems to get mentioned
more than any other.

Gonzales' style, Jason Lee's 360 flips, Mariano's lines, Rudy's tech and
Richter's miniramp attack… it never gets old.

and, yeah, that's Jason Lee, the famous actor, for those who care.
Mallrats, Enemy of the State, Almost Famous,
Alvin and the Chipmunks… alotta flicks.
that dude even did voice work in "The Incredibles". hahaha
yessssir.
